Officers rescued 13 ducklings stuck in a storm drain in York Township on Tuesday and reunited them with their mother who was waiting for them, York Area Regional Police Chief Tom Gross said.

Several residents out in the neighborhood over the lunch hour spotted the ducklings trapped in a storm drain along Knob Hill Lane, according to a news release. Police responded to the scene after receiving a call about it.

Officer Andy Mallette brought a ladder from the Police Emergency Services Unit, and Sgt. Jeffry Dunbar climbed down into the roughly 10-foot-deep drain to get the ducklings out, according to the news release and Gross. Lt. Toby Zech assisted with the rescue as well.

“They went back with their mother,” Gross said. “She was waiting right there.”

She headed off with her babies.
