An anguished mother in Wisconsin believes her young daughter suddenly died from a freak reaction to the vaccine for human papillomavirus.

But she won’t know for many weeks what killed her 12-year-old girl.

Dad Mark Prohaska said “It has to be that vaccine.”

Meredith Prohaska, of Waukesha, had a sore throat on the morning of July 30. Her mom took her to the doctor. During that visit, she was given the HPV vaccine, which guards against the common sexually transmitted virus that may cause cervical cancer.

Rebecca Prohaska went out for food and returned to find Meredith on the floor, with purple lips and no pulse.

The mom, who is an EMT for the National Guard, performed CPR and called 911.

Her daughter was pronounced dead at the hospital. An autopsy was inconclusive. The family is now awaiting advanced tests which may take up to 10 weeks.

The girl’s funeral was scheduled for Saturday.
