Police rescued a boater from the cold East River after he crashed his 43-foot-fishing boat into rocks on Friday night.

Police said the man was driving his boat between the Triboro Bridge and Rikers Island at around 8 p.m. Friday when he crashed into rocks.

The boat began taking on water and the man called for help on an emergency radio.

Police were on the scene fast and they say the vessel was sinking quickly.

“We were the first unit on scene,” said Detective Jeff Haas. “We arrived within about two minutes, his vessel was already about three-quarters under water. As we were approaching, when he saw our blue light and we hit him with the spotlight, he exited his boat off the flybridge and jumped into the water, which is 53 degrees, which is pretty cold for this time of year and at that point we went into rescue operations.”
