According to Daily Caller, Lindsey Graham has officially asked that the remaining Boston Marathon Bombing suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, not be mirandized, but rather to be treated as an Enemy Combatant.
“Enemy Combatant” is a term used to refer to the status of people in the military belonging to a country with which the US is at war. This “designation” has been used to indefinitely detain suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay and other “black sites” all over Europe since 9/11.
The designation itself means that the person can be tried in a military court (tribunal) and doesn’t “need to be afforded” the same rights as a person who is arrested normally.
“If captured, I hope Administration will at least consider holding the Boston suspect as enemy combatant for intelligence gathering purposes,” -Graham tweet from this afternoon
“If the #Boston suspect has ties to overseas terror organizations he could be treasure trove of information,”
“The last thing we may want to do is read Boston suspect Miranda Rights telling him to ‘remain silent,’”
In other words, if we find this guy, we’re going to torture him under the new Bush-era definition of “non-torture” (truth serum, waterboarding, etc), hoping to extract information out of him that may or may not be true about “terrorists” in other countries.
