The husband of former Florida Secretary of State and Rep. Katherine Harris killed himself on Tuesday after a long illness, police said.

Police found the body of Sven Anders Axel Ebbeson at a home in Sarasota, Fla., after receiving a call of a suspected suicide Tuesday morning, according to a Sarasota Police statement.

The police also included a request from the family’s pastor for privacy.

“At this time, we’re asking the media to respect the privacy of the family. Mr. Ebbeson was recently suffering from an illness. The family is asking for privacy, prayers, thoughts and love from the community,” Pastor William Hild of First Baptist Church of Sarasota said.

The Sarasota police chief said Harris “wanted the community, her family and friends to know that her husband is no longer suffering.”

Harris served two terms in the House, from 2003 to 2007, and was secretary of state of Florida during the 2000 election. Also the co-chairwoman of George W. Bush’s Florida campaign, Harris certified Bush was the winner of the election in Florida and ordered an end to the recount process that ultimately resulted in Bush’s victory in the election.
