CNN is reporting that a National Guardsman got into a fight with two other Guardsmen just outside the base at about 12;45. One allegedly pulled a gun and shot one of the men in the foot, and the other one in the leg, according to Memphis local news. Both victims have been hospitalized, but both don’t have life-threatening injuries, according to the Navy.

The lockdown lasted about 90 minutes after the suspect was taken into custody. A law enforcement official who wished to remain anonymous told the AP that the shooter was a recruiter who had just been fired.

Millington Police Chief Rita Stanback said the shooter was caught and disarmed of a small handgun by other Guardsmen before police arrived. Their efforts likely saved others from being shot.

“I’m sure there could have been more (injuries) if they hadn’t taken him into custody,” Stanback said.

Known as Naval Support Activity Mid-South, the base is located in Millington, TN, near Memphis, and serves as one of Tennessee’s biggest employers. With more than 7,500 military and civilian employees, it serves as a center for Navy personnel, recruiting, logistical support, and finance center for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
