domicopter-a-dominos-pizza-delivery-droneFirst of all, just a disclaimer, all franchises mentioned in this article serve terrible pizza that is absolutely horrible for your body, and most of our readers know better than to eat that garbage. But when pizza delivery starts using “Big Brother” tech to deliver it’s garbage, we need to pay attention.

In the latest publicity stunt to battle Papa Johns’s new ordering system via X-Box and as a follow-up to the appropriately-named “Our Pizza Sucks” campaign, Dominos has released a new gimmicky youtube video to show just how awesome having Big Brother come and feed your family garbage really can be:

add-an-edge-Dominos-article-graphicNow, the possibilities of this, if confined solely to delivering garbage made by robotic hands, are incredibly dehumanizing, in the sense that both of these franchise’s methods involve cutting out human interaction between the people making the pizza and the person being delivered it. With X-Box’s Papa Johns ordering system, you don’t have to call or talk to anyone throughout the entire process, and if Dominos is serious about this whole drone thing, it may get to the point where all your food can be brought to you at any time with no human communication whatsoever. A scary thought when you think of how big of a problem social alienation is for people nowadays: Neighbors don’t know each other, everyone’s mistrustful of one another, and nobody wants to get robbed or screwed in any way, so we avoid interacting with others entirely.

However, this could prove to be very useful technology if used in the correct context. Instead of carrying garbage food or bombs, it could carry emergency medical supplies to a disaster area before the helicopters arrive. It can bring bags of organic vegetables you’ve grown to your neighbor who lives 45 minutes away…the possibilities for good are almost endless.

As a species, we must stop letting big business dominate the skies with Big Brother technology. I am starting to believe that domestic drone use can’t really be stopped entirely. The market of domestic drone technology can, however, be used for good, and that’s the turning point we’re at now: Are we really so naive that we believe we can “stop drones” when the horse has been out of the barn for years? Or are we smart enough that we can recognize ways to modify this technology (and other technologies like 3D printing) to our advantage?
