“Paying it forward” is a term used to describe when a beneficiary of a good deed “repays” the deed by doing something kind for someone else entirely, often a stranger, creating a chain of goodwill. It can not only brighten someone’s day, but it can change the course of someone’s life.
This phenomenon is not new, over ten years ago a book and subsequent film called Pay if Forward were released, and if you’re a follower of Oprah or Ellen you know they’ve been “paying it forward” for years with their giveaways. We’ve all heard about the homeless man who returned an engagement ring he found which was mistakenly dropped into the cup he used to collect change.
A perfect example of a “pay it forward” is the act of donating blood with the Red Cross−it’s a selfless act that benefits a stranger. This concept goes back even further. Ben Franklin, in 1784, claimed it was a trick of his to “do a deal of good with little money” by starting a chain of good deeds. He loaned money to someone in distress and asked this person to “repay him” by loaning money to someone else in distress, so that in the end many would benefit.
