Hundreds (including residents from a nearby nursing home) are believed to be injured in a large explosion reported at a fertilizer plant in West, TX (Near Waco, Texas). People are reportedly trapped in buildings and 10 nearby buildings are on fire. Authorities have ordered the evacuation of all the residents in the town, as a second explosion is feared at this time.

According to Jason Shelton, a clerk at the Czech Best Western Hotel in West,

“It was a small fire and then water got sprayed the ammonia nitrate, and it exploded just like the Oklahoma City bomb.”

Apparently, firefighters were trying to contain a blaze and accidentally caused the huge explosion, injuring several of them.

Lydia Zimmerman, told KWTX local news that she, her husband and daughter were in their garden in Bynum, 13 miles from West, when they heard multiple blasts.

“It sounded like three bombs going off very close to us,” she said.

According to Scott Friedman of local station NBC 5, the EPA records indicate that this is a pesticide plant, not a fertilizer plant. That could’ve had some effect on the response of the firefighters which caused the explosion. If they had been aware that it was a fertilizer plant and not a pesticide plant, they may have pursued other methods of fighting the flames.
