Almost half of our food supply is wasted due to use-by date anxiety

If milk has chunks in it and smells, it’s time to go the store to get a new carton. It seems so simple, yet many of us take our food-freshness cues from the use-by date on the packaging instead of relying on common sense. This is contributing to shocking amounts of food being wasted in this country. The problem is that most of us believe that if a product is past its use-by or sell-by date, it’s not safe to eat. However, much of it is fine and the dates really refer to the product’s peak freshness. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council and Harvard Law School’s Food Law and Policy Clinic, use-by date heebie jeebies results in 40 per cent of America’s food supply being tossed out unnecessarily.
