At this point in flu season, many people have successfully avoided the debilitating virus. Those hoping to continue their undefeated season might want to follow the Kansas City Chiefs’ lead and improve their defense.

Getting a flu shot is the best way to prevent catching the infection, but a traditional Japanese pickle could also help stop the virus. The pickled turnip, known as suguki, contains bacteria that could make it the next superfood, according to research from a Japanese food manufactuering company, Kagome Co., LTD, which is published in the journal Letters in Applied Microbiology.

The bacteria, Lactobacillus brevis KB290, are reportedly safe for human consumption and can even improve digestive health, researchers said.

Researchers tested the effects of the bacteria on 60 female mice. The mice were then split into three groups: one that was exposed to the flu, one that was not exposed to the flu and one that was given the flu virus as well as the preventive bacteria.
