LIBYAARMS-articleLargeLike we’ve mentioned on the show previously, and in our previous articles concerning Syria and Libya, the weapons used by Gaddhafi’s regime in Libya will now be transferred by the new Libyan Al-qaeda regime to the Syrian rebels (“al-Qaeda”). In a stunning and sooner-than-expected revelation by New York Times writers today,

Evidence gathered in Syria, along with flight-control data and interviews with militia members, smugglers, rebels, analysts and officials in several countries, offers a profile of a complex and active multinational effort, financed largely by Qatar, to transport arms from Libya to Syria’s opposition fighters. Libya’s own former fighters, who sympathize with Syria’s rebels, have been eager collaborators.

Just for some geopolitical clarification, when the writers suggest that these weapons transfers are “financed largely by Qatar”, it probably doesn’t mean the people of Qatar are funding this operation. Most likely, NGO’s such as the National Endowment for Democracy are funneling money through Qatar under the auspices of “supporting the green revolution” to fund the weapons transfers to Syria. So in reality, the U.S. taxpayer is paying for this, not “Qatar”. The NYT continues:

…these secretive transfers give insight into an unregistered arms pipeline that is difficult to monitor or control.

jp-libyaarms-popupThe article further reveals that these same weapons were actually given to Gaddhafi by the Soviets decades ago, and that NATO allies are essentially stealing them right out from under them and giving them directly to their enemies (a bold move, but not unlike them in character). It also reveals more players in this geopolitical sideshow:

For Russia — which has steadfastly supplied weapons and diplomatic cover to President Bashar al-Assad of Syria — this black-market flow is a case of bitter blowback. Many of the weapons Moscow proudly sold to Libya beginning in the Soviet era are now being shipped into the hands of rebels seeking to unseat another Kremlin ally.
Those weapons, which slipped from state custody as Colonel Qaddafi’s people rose against him in 2011, are sent on ships or Qatar Emiri Air Force flights to a network of intelligence agencies and Syrian opposition leaders in Turkey. From there, Syrians distribute the arms according to their own formulas and preferences to particular fighting groups, which in turn issue them to their fighters on the ground, rebels and activists said.

Coming back to what we have both said about this situation: We firmly believe that the murder of Ambassador Stevens in Benghazi is directly linked to these weapons transfers, and that the Obama Administration doesn’t want to deal with the questions that are likely to be raised regarding this whole drama.

So instead of seeing officials responsible for the Benghazi massacre punished to the fullest extent of the law, we’re seeing whistleblowers and truth-tellers getting the brunt of the Obama Administration’s growing brutality and for everyone else, widespread threats of surveillance and indefinite detention.
