A family of seven in Manistee County was stunned by an early morning fire.

But now, they’re relieved by the outpouring of community support. Five kids and two adults lost everything Sunday morning after a fire ripped through their Bear Lake home. But neighbors were quick to rise to the occasion and lend a helping hand.

“I never imagined this would happen to me,” says Sarah Troopi, who was displaced by the fire.

A family was awakened by flames and smoke in their kids bedroom. “Not too many trailers would still be standing, although it’s not livable. But I’m grateful to have them because they could have went and hid,” says Troopi.

Even though most of the damage was done to the kids bedroom, the house is destroyed and all of their belongings ruined. Troopi says, “Ya know, their clothes, their toys, then everything’s smoke damaged from curtains to bedding, just like starting over. It just went up, it was gone. Yeah, it was quite devastating but I’m grateful the community’s coming together to help with donations because I don’t know what we would do without their help.”

A neighbor, two doors down recently had a garage sale and offered to let the family stop by and pick out whatever they wanted. “So they came down and took bags of stuff, and then I posted on Facebook, twice now for people to help,” says Karen Groenwald, neighbor.

The gift of giving has spread like wildfire. The displaced family will also be getting a new place to call home with tons of items from the community. Groenwald says, “It just makes ya feel good, to be a Good Samaritan and help out and I had no need to keep this stuff, it was going to go to Goodwill any how, I might as well give it to somebody I know that needed it.”

The family will be staying in a hotel until tomorrow but will be looking for a place to stay until they can move into their new home next Wednesday. If you are interested in helping this family, contact Sarah Troopi at 231-923-0092.
